RABBIT MOVIE NIGHT

THU MAY 24TH:

LIVE MUSIC BY BEN VON WILDENHAUS + SCREENING  ’LENINGRAD COWBOYS GO AMERICA’ BY AKI KAURISMAKI

May Rabbit Movie Night will screen acclaimed Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki’s bizarro cult film ‘Leningrad Cowboys Go America’, opened by the video/guitar collaboration ‘Orbothology’ performed live by Ben Von Wildenhaus.

8pm:

ORBOTHOLOGY w/ BEN VON WILDENHAUS

is a collaboration between the video artists House Plants and the guitarist Ben von Wildenhaus. The audio/visual project looks at the uneasy politics that arise when American youth engage with the world through the skewed lens of youtube videos and hipsterized ‘world music.’ The orb takes center stage as a fetishized object of Eastern mysticism and American new ageism. The performance is both hilarious and intensely psychedelic.

Ben von Wildenhaus is a multi-instrumentalist originally from the pacific northwest who has performed with acts such as Federation X, Two Dark Birds, and Professional Band. He currently resides in Queens, New York. Performing on solo electric guitar, Wildenhaus works with minimal loops, hypnotic rhythms, and strange and beautiful melodies to create an aural landscape that falls somewhere between the darkness of a murderous forest and the playful seduction of Americanized belly dance music. His 2011 album Great Melodies From Around has been been featured in Spin, Magnet, and Foxy Digitalis. “Orbothology” debuted as a showcasing performance at SXSW 2012 in Austin, Texas. The collaboration also made appearances in Los Angeles, CA, Olympia, WA, Seattle, WA, and Bellingham, WA.

House Plants is a collaborative video enterprise by Brooklyn, New York artists Michael Nason and Brendan Harman and a loosely associated group of artists. Their works include music videos for Das Racist, Led Er Est, Acrylics, Ben von Wildenhaus, and Jeffery Jeruselem; acting and video collaborations with Weird Days and Sunset Television; as well as the internet video source HelloHousePlants.Com.

8:30pm:

LENINGRAD COWBOYS GO AMERICA

Aki Kaurismaki’s 1989 cult film, Leningrad Cowboys Go America is a road movie about the adventures of a loser Russian rock band wearing ludicrous hairstyles traveling in the US to become famous. This is the director’s first hit film (despite a hand full of other amazing earlier films) and ironically brought the fictional band to real-life fame after its release. Kaurismaki has been Finland’s leading indie art-house filmmaker since the 80′s with his omnipresent social criticism and fusing minimalism and melodrama. His cynical yet humorous depiction of Northern Europe’s lower class in addition to his consistent usage of 60′s Rock’n'roll soundtracks are signatures to his very unique style. Jim Jarmusch has a cameo as a car dealer in this film. Also there are cameo appearances by blues guitarist Duke Robillard and American Rockabilly Hall of Famer, Colonel Robert Morris, with his wife Irene.

For many years, band leader and multi-instrumentalist Alex Meixner has been blithely ignoring the standard music-industry advice that artists must narrowly define their style of music.  Jazz, Gypsy folk songs, German and Irish beer drinking favorites, sambas, zydeco, country, rock, and several other genres make their way into Meixner’s eclectic blend. The Grammy-nominated performer brings his act to the Center for the Arts of Homer for a special Friday night performance

Bael

at Signal Gallery
32 Paul Street, Hoxton
London EC2A 4LB
info@signalgallery.com
www.signalgallery.com

Over the past few years the artist known as ‘Bael’ has produced a stunning series of stark, haunting figurative paintings. Using himself as the model in these earlier works, gave them a uniquely atavistic intensity. His very well received first solo show in 2011 at Signal ‘Die Tiere’ (The Beast) saw the culmination of this exuberant narcissistic phase.

Parallax Art Fair
Chelsea Town Hall, London
May 16-18, 2012

The fourth Parallax international contemporary art fair in London will showcase over 200 emerging and established artists from over thirty countries.

Featuring over 2000 works, Parallax Art Fair is the largest “curated” international artist art fair in Europe. The exhibitors are mainly unrepresented artists from all over the world, many of whom have strong following in their own countries but have yet to be discovered internationally.  They will be exhibiting diverse works of art ranging from surrealist-like paintings and sculpture to quirky pieces of fish and even blades of grass. Sounds like a good place to spend the weekend. And May in London isn’t so bad.

NYU WRITERS IN FLORENCE:  A Tuscan Retreat for Emerging Writers

In this literary retreat, students work intensively to generate new writing in the enchanting, historically rich setting where so many writers—from Dante to E. M. Forster—have found literary inspiration. Students participate in daily workshops and craft seminars, and attend readings and special lectures on all aspects of the writer’s life. On weekends, students have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of their literary predecessors: they might walk along the Arno River, view the sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo, or stroll through the Boboli gardens. Classes and residences are located at Villa La Pietra, the Florentine campus consisting of 5 historic villas and 57 acres of gardens and olive groves.

CNY’s Finest Features Three Groups

at The Center for the Arts of Homer April 27

Central New York musicians will get another chance to shine at the Center for the Arts of Homer on April 27th.  Three musical acts will bring a variety of styles, sounds, and years of experience to the second installment of CNY’s Finest, a presentation that will begin at 7 pm.

Featured in the spring production are Frenay and Lenin, of Syracuse, at 7 pm, The Unknown Woodsmen, of Cortland, at 8 pm, and The Mutron Warriors, of Ithaca at 9 pm.  Singer/guitarist Jim VanDeusen will perform in the Community Room before the show and between the acts.

In the summer of 2006, Gary Frenay and Arty Lenin were inducted into the SAMMY’s Hall Of Fame.  They have also been honored at the SAMMY Awards Ceremony with trophies for Best Acoustic Act, and Best Rock Instrumentalist (Lenin).  During the past 34 years, the pair have been associated with many styles and band names: the raucous new wave/rock and roll of the Flashcubes, the stylish dance-pop of Screen Test, and the harmony-based oldies rock of the Neverly Brothers Band and The FabCats (formerly the Fab Five). No matter what the style of music the two have always featured strong harmony vocals and highly-proficient guitar work.

Tickets for the April 27thshow will be $10 and will be sold at the door.  Door open at 6 pm, and refreshments including desserts, coffee, tea, beer, and wine will be sold at the show.

WE ARE YOU PROJECT INTERNATIONAL

Inaugural Exhibit: March 18 – May 5, 2012
Wilmer Jennings Gallery at Kenkeleba
219 East 2nd Street, New York, NY 10009
(212) 674-3939

The Wilmer Jennings Gallery at Kenkeleba will present the inaugural exhibit of the WE ARE YOU PROJECT from Sunday, March 18 to Saturday, May 5, 2012. This exhibition, developed by We Are You Project, represents the first comprehensive, coast-to-coast, artistic overview of the current state of Latino socio-cultural, political, and economic conditions in the 21st Century.

These express conditions are reflected in paintings and prints by thirty-three prominent, contemporary Hispanic artists whose trans-cultural and pan-Latino-heritage can be traced to many and diverse Ibero-American traditions, including Mexico, Puerto-Rico, Cuba, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, the Dominican Republic, and Spain and Portugal.  Most importantly, each artist or their families have experienced the perspective of being an immigrant, refugee, a migrant, expatriate, or nomad, who gratefully found a new home in the United States, and where over the course of years, they have attained professional success by expressing both their vision and unique personal story.

The exhibiting artists of the We Are You Project inaugural exhibition include: José Acosta, Efren Alvárez, Nelson Alvárez, Willie Báez, Josephine Barreiro, Hugo X. Bastidas,, Monica S. Camin, Priscila De Carvalho, Jacqui Casale, Gerardo Castro, Pablo Caviedes, Carlos Chavez, William Coronado, Maritza Dávila, Rosario D’Rivera, Fernando Goldoni, Elizabeth Jiménez Montelongo, Roberto Marquez, Raphael Montañez Ortíz, Hugo Morales, Lisette Morel, Gabriel Navar, Julio Nazario, Jimmy Peña, Joe Peňa,

Duda Penteado,  Mel Ramos, Rolando Reyna, Jesus Rivera, José Rodeiro, Marta Sanchez, Sergio Villamizar and Raúl Villarreal.

At the Opening Reception, introductions to the We Are You Project premiere exhibition will be made by Dr. Carlos Hernandez, President, New Jersey City University, as well as Mr. Mario Tapia, President of the Latino Center on Aging in New York City and Miami. Additionally, Hiram Colon, the composer of the music and lyrics for the We Are You theme-song, will perform in collaboration with singer Sophia Angelica, of the Dora the Explorer television show. There will be a We Are You Project Poetry Reading on April 7 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. The exhibit, Opening Reception and other events are free and open to the public.

8:30 pm:
Pasolini’s ‘SALO’, also known as The 120 Days of Sodom, has been called nauseating, shocking, depraved, pornographic . . . the film is also a masterpiece. The controversial poet, novelist, and filmmaker’s transposition of the Marquis de Sade’s eighteenth-century opus of torture and degradation to Fascist Italy in 1944 remains one of the most passionately debated films of all time, a thought-provoking inquiry into the political, social, and sexual dynamics that define the world we live in.

Ando’s 9-11 Memorial Sculpture Unveiled

The memorial, created by polishing part of a three-story piece of World Trade Center Steel, was unveiled last week by London’s Mayor Boris Johnson. An educational program to teach tolerance to children was launched at the same time by the 9/11 London Foundation, which commissioned the sculpture.
